The ftp command is a client software that requires the existence of a ftp server on the remote host. Because maintaining a ftp serveur on a computer is a delicate task (piracy), it is ofter simpler to use the command sftp which allows ftp through a secure ssh connexion. Using sftp is very similar in its principle as using ftp.
